BT want to know which communities want their exchanges upgraded to fibre optic broadband first. For it to happen at all we need at least 1000 votes for Burton exchange. To vote is simple: all you need to do is go to the BT Race to Infinity website here [www.racetoinfinity.bt.com] and vote. It's a simple process and takes 2 minutes of your time. By doing this we're letting BT know that fast internet technologies are important for our community. We need as many households as possible to vote - it's one vote per address this time! So please do support this important upgrade opportunity.

The five areas with the largest percentage of votes by December 31st 2010 will win the chance to bring superfast broadband to their area. BT will also donate £5,000 of computer equipment to a local community project.

Whether you're big on social networking, gaming, streaming, uploading or downloading, prepare to have your life transformed with superfast speeds.

To vote simply go to 'VOTE NOW' and enter your details. Don't forget to pass it on to your friends on Facebook and Twitter to get your area to the top of the scoreboard.

Exchanges need 1,000 premises votes to be eligible to be one of the winning exchanges
One vote per address
Race ends midnight 31st December 2010

Please will the parish council and the community support the campaign for the exchange upgrade? Thanks!

just what they would like and why?

I thought this was an interesting piece of kit for dealing with potholes: [news.bbc.co.uk] - does the PC know if Cumbra CC has one? If not, is it worth suggesting they should have! £60 per pothole sounds a lot less than the cost of several men and a wagon of tarmac to fill them in!

Re: Leaking aqueduct and Francis' Post.

That explains the temporary fix that's been applied which has reduced the leak a lot. Will have to wait and see how it stands up to the rigors of time. At least the road is in the process of being repaired !

Whilst we are talking potholes, those along Station Lane between the canal aqueduct and the junction by Burtlands are worsening daily, not at all helped by the continuing stream of water issuing from the aqueduct itself! The water loss from the aqueduct is the worst I have ever seen in the 20 years I've lived in the village, and it's causing a river running down the lane and round the corner to where it used to flood so badly. This continued leakage could well cause a problem with the structure of the aqueduct itself and needs urgent attention.

Congratulations to the Council on its new "quality" status - and in particular to Charles Dale.
Is there a chance that the new status can quickly show a dividend? It is some months since the Powers-that-be resurfaced the Kirkby Lonsdale road, from Plain Quarry towards Hutton Roof (almost entirely outside the Parish). Might they be persuaded to do something similar from the quarry in this direction - within the Parish - where there are worsening potholes on down past the West Lodge? (It's a funny thing .... if I were still on the Council, I probably couldn't raise this, as the risk to my car's suspension gives me a "personal interest". But as I'm not, I can!).
And P.S. We're delighted that at long last they've dealt with the pavements.
We saw the great grey Shrike on Saturday 4th march when we walked up through the crags to the trig point and across to Farleton Knott. The GGS was sat atop a tree between the footpath and the wall close to the gate which leads onto open ground and the trig point. 3 very friendly birdwatchers had a telescope set up so we got a very good view of it and it was singing it's little heart out! Francis describes it perfectly and, although not birdwatchers, we felt very privileged to see it. Walking in this area is always wonderful and particulary so that weekend with snow thick on the ground - we saw footprints of many species and the panoramic views spectacular - who'd live anywhere else?
A rather macabre footnote to Francis's observations on the GGS is that it is also known as 'The Butcher Bird'as it impales its spare victims on thorns or barbed wire - to eat later!

A comparatively rare bird the Great Grey Shrike has recently been spotted in the woodland at Dalton Crags

Great Grey Shrikes usually sit conspicuously on the tops of bushes or posts, scanning for prey such as rodents and small birds. They are white underneath, pearl grey above with mostly black wings and a mostly black tail. Once again, they have a striking black mask through the eye, although this does not reach round onto the forehead as in Lesser Grey Shrike. Notice how the wing tips don't even reach the back part of the tail.

Breeds and winters in open heathy areas with scattered bushes.

An uncommon winter visitor and passage migrant, which favours areas of open country such as heathland. There are no guaranteed sites, but birds often tend to return to the same place each winter. Westleton Heath in Suffolk and Beaulieu Road Station in the New Forest, are two regular sites.

Widespread occuring in almost every part of Europe for at least some of the year. They are, however, scarce and rather difficult to find, except in parts of Spain and Portugal where you can expect several sightings per day; eg at Monfrague (Spain) or the Sado Estuary (Portugal).

260-360,000 breeding pairs mostly found in Spain and Portugal. Scandinavia also supports sizeable populations but it is rare elsewhere.

I agree totally Graham! Waiting for youngsters to talk to adults is like waiting for hell to freeze over... it may happen eventually but it'll be along old wait. :-( Perhaps some of us who would like to see something done should go talk to the youngsters in their own environment?

Incidentally, the Hot Topic should be asking if Burton wants a YOUTH SHELTER not a Youth Centre (that was what the PC was supposed to be finding out). Although perhaps a Youth Centre would be a good idea as well? :-)

Maybe we need some blue sky thinking on the issue of a 'Youth Club'? I am 40 and youth clubs were out of date when I was a teenager! Lets be creative and innovative in engaging the youth of Burton. Find out what they want to do and create something special around their ideas. Use their energy to work for all of us.
Just a thought..............
I am very much with Barry on this one. We need to involve the people who would ultimately be using the facility. Nobody wants them hanging around the square smoking and making noise but I encourage everyone to think back to when you were their age and how you felt when adults tried to enforce things onto you.
I appreciate that 'things were different back then' and the 'it was never like that when I was a kid' sentiments but we are all living in 2006 now and need to work 'with' the yound people to find a solution and not just impose one onto them. Why are we waiting for them to come to us? Why doesn't someone (appropriate) go out into the square and talk to them about what would make a difference to them? I suggest that we do less communicating with each other and start communicating with them!
